Snow

There was a lot of snow on the ground for the Hoonah Sound hikes. 

Bears

We saw plenty of brownies, but they were a little far away for photographing.  May is bear hunting season in Southeast Alaska, and the bears seem to know it. 

There were a lot of bear hunters in Hoonah Sound last week, but none of them wanted to stay in the anchorages where kayakers might scare the bears off of the beaches.  Yay!  Here is a bear print we found in the snow.

Mothership

Rain or shine, the mothership was there at the end of every day of paddling.

Great Sea Kayaking

Hoonah Sound was a great adventure.  There were many fantastic places to explore by kayak.  It didn't hurt that it was mostly sunny.

Hoonah Sound

What a week!  We were with our hardy adventurers, who return to us each and every year.  Great weather, fantastic scenery and many wonderful meals from the sea.  Here was the start of one of them.

Sitka!

We'll pick up our first kayakers here on Saturday, spend a couple of days in nearby islands and then head through Peril Strait to Hoonah Sound for a week of kayaking and hiking adventures.  There will be no internet or telephone connection on this trip, so we'll report back here after it is concluded.

At the moment, the skies are sunny and the snowy peaks are stunning.  Looking forward to seeing you this summer.  Unless you forgot to sign up for this summer.  In that case, email us about next summer!

Alaska!

We made it to Ketchikan, the first port of call in Alaska, on Saturday.  We saw sunny skies and serene seas most of the way up.

We are resting and refreshing for a few days before heading to Sitka, the jump-off point of our first trip.
