Gut Bay Bears

Gut Bay was a bear bonanza.  Just as we were thinking about paddling around to look for some, this guy came ambling along the shore, just off of our stern.

Melting Snow

We had a lot more snow earlier in the Kake trip than later.  Every day was sunny and warm, and the snow began to disappear.

Patterson Bay

The east side of Baranof (AKA the waterfall coast) did not disappoint.  Steep walls with miraculous trees and snow melting into waterfalls. 

Petersburg

Wow.  What a week.  We started in Kake and ended in Petersburg, and did the east side of Baranof Island in between.  Wall-to-wall, sunshine, snowy peaks, hundreds of waterfalls, many bears and a curious whale.  What more could we ask for?  How about fun people from Wisconsin and fresh seafood for dinners?  Check.  And check.  We're feeling lucky!

Seal Cove

You start in a bear-inhabited estuary and hike past Surprise Lake to get to Seal Cove.  The lake was partially frozen and the beach was beautiful.

Waterfall

One of the highlights of the Hoonah Sound trip was this stunning waterfall near Nelson Island.
