2011 was a good year for Humpback Whale watching. Everyone on every trip saw whales. Lots of them. Sometimes they come over and check us out but mostly they just swim and eat.
What a great week we had. They were up for anything we threw at them. Even kayaking in the rain. Yes, wouldn't you know it, family came on the wettest week of the summer. A great time was had by all (and we were a long way from the shopping mall).
The SE Alaska glaciers are mostly retreating. Nearly everyone from Juneau has a story about the Mendenhall Glacier and how far it has retreated since they have been there. Here is some incredible time lapse photography: http://www.extremeicesurvey.org/index.php/new_gallery/timelapse_51/ The Mendenhall is a "drive up to" glacier in Juneau. We recommend that all of our guests see it when they are in Juneau and often visit it ourselves on our off days. Great hiking trails.
We paddle and hike up to and on the Baird Glacier every summer. A fantastic experience.
