Look closely. These are Sea Otters hauled out on ice. I have never seen this and confirmed with a marine biologist from the University of Alaska that it is unusual. Sea Otters are known to spend their entire lives in water. Seals, on the other hand, are a common sight. They raise their pups on ice and we are extremely careful to not disturb them when we encounter them, even in kayaks.
