This guy was on the beach a lot.  He paid no attention to kayakers, preferring instead to concentrate on consuming large quantities of grass.

Tufted Puffins

We found them quite unexpectedly on a little island near one of our favorite fishing holes in Icy Strait.  What a treat!

Orcas

We often cross paths with Orcas but they are unpredictable and they rarely linger.  Maybe that is why they are a favorite aboard Abyssinia when they appear.

 

Bears

This was a great year for bear sightings.  We saw a bear on nearly every beach, and sometimes there were two or more of them.  The best part about watching bears is the drama that unfolds before your eyes.  If you are lucky, you will get to see a mama bear with a cub or two.  Often you will see males challenging one another, or one male quickly departing the scene to avoid another one.  Early in the summer the bears dig for clams on the beach.  Later, when the salmon come in, they fish.

 

Whales

We have never had a trip in SE Alaska where we have not seen whales...lots of them.

 

Porpoises

We love seeing whales while we are cruising, but that is purely a specatator sport.  Porpoises, in contrast, come out to play.  They swim as a group with lightening speed and it is always exciting to see them coming.  Once they arrive, they play in the bow wake until they tire of the game.  No matter how many times it happens, we always find it to be a joyous experience.

Eagles

Eagles are everywhere in Southeast Alaska, but we never tire of seeing them.  This pair was waiting for salmon leftovers from the many bears in the area.
